Thank you for your interest in the Worthington Spirit program.
The Worthington Spirit softball program is a travel softball program. Players and coaches are expected to attend to all practices, clinics, and games as scheduled by the program. A player’s availability for practices and games may determine their team assignment. Off -season practices are typically scheduled indoors at the Worthington Rec Center on Saturday afternoons/evenings twice per month in November - February, with outdoor practices beginning as soon as the weather permits. All eligible players are encouraged to join their middle school teams for spring season. Younger players will practice outdoors at McCord Park beginning in April.
8U: The 8U program is based at McCord Park. Games begin the first week of June and are played on Sundays, doubleheaders, beginning at noon. The season runs through the end of July. The league is machine pitch and is umpired by former high school players. This team does not travel and does not participate in out of Worthington tournaments.
10U, 12U, and 14U: These programs are part of the I-270 league. This league is made up of other community and travel teams based in Central Ohio. Typical game schedules include Dublin, Westerville, Hilliard and Olentangy teams. The league tries to schedule divisions to address the travel time and cost issues, but schedules are not available until spring. Games are doubleheaders 2 nights per week on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday. The season runs from the first week of June through the end of July. Home fields include Linworth Park, Thomas Worthington and Worthington Kilbourne fields. Players are expected to arrive at the game site by 5 pm, with games beginning at 6 pm.
Teams may be entered in local tournaments depending upon their level of competitiveness. The softball committee evaluates each team and their competitiveness prior to entering any tournaments. Most of these tournaments are local (Whitehall, Pickerington, Plain City, New Albany) and require weekend attendance, including some Friday afternoons.
Cost: Fees are determined based upon the costs of running the program. 2009 fees were $150 for 8U, $300 for 10U and 12U, and $225 for 14U. The first payment of $150 is due at the initial team meeting, and the balance is due by 1/15/10.
Equipment: Players need to come to practices and games with the following items: Athletic clothing, running shoes for indoor practices and cleats for outdoor practices and games, sliding shorts, glove, helmet with faceguard and chin strap, and water bottle. Bats and bat bags are optional.
