WHAT IS GYMNASTICS?
Gymnastics is a physical activity performed individually, or as part of agroup, in which the participant demonstrates body control over a wide range of movement patterns. Gymnastics activities may utilize either heavy or light apparatus and a variety of mats. It can be engaged in as a competitive sport, or simply as an educational or recreational pursuit. As a competitive sport, it is one of the oldest known to mankind and is one of the most organized and most popular of the current Olympic sports. As a recreational pursuit, its emphasis on the development of strength, concentration, coordination, and control of all parts of the body is an excellent foundation for success in any other sport or physical activity. Because of this, many athletes who have excelled in other sports in high school and college had their first training in gymnastics.
GOALS & OBJECTIVES OF THE WYB GYMNASTICS PROGRAM
1. To give the students opportunities for expression, self-discovery, and for the experience of the joy of effort in challenging and vigorous physical activity.
2. To allow the students to test their own physical abilities while helping them develop a sensitivity and awareness of their bodies, thoughts, and feelings.
3. To enhance the students' own sense of confidence in themselves by providing a positive environment and positive reinforcement every time they achieve another in a progressive series of skills.
PROGRESSIONS - HOW WE TEACH
The Worthington Youth Boosters gymnastics staff believes that teaching and learning physical skills slowly and in a progressive manner is, without question, a fundamental cornerstone to success and safety in gymnastics and other sport/fitness activities. Students should be able to clearly demonstrate mastery over a broad spectrum of basic gymnastics skills before advancing to more complex movements.
In an attempt to maximize a gymnasts' learning rate, sometimes inexperienced or over zealous coaches depend too heavily on spotting techniques, rather than on appropriate use of skill progressions. This approach can actually rob the student of basic movement experiences essential to proper learning of more complex skills and sequences.
Developing greater body awareness is at the core of training in any sport. In all athletic endeavors, even the most complex skills or sequences stem from the continuous refinement of fundamental skills. This is certainly the case in gymnastics.
In our program, each child will receive reinforcement every time they achieve new skills, and they will then move on to more difficult skills. Each child will work at their own pace. Parents can review their child's progress with our directors at any time before or after any class. Parental involvement in their childs' progress is strongly encouraged.
